According to State Sen. Bill Mims and Delegates Dick Black and Joe May, they received a "warm reception" at a Commonwealth Transportation Board meeting last week when they requested increased funding for safety improvements to Route 15.

Safety has become a concern because of the increased number of accidents on the road. Nine persons have died on Route 15 since 1996.

"Safety improvements to Route 15 are the highest priority in Loudoun County," said Mims in a written statement. "The state must provide significant funding immediately to protect citizens who must use this dangerous road."

Mims, May and Black are co-sponsoring major highway legislation that could provide over $10 million for Route 15 improvements.

"Route 15 improvements are a two step process," said Black. "The first step was to get Route 15 on the priority list for the Transportation Coordinating Committee. The second step is to enact legislation which provides necessary funding."

Black, who serves on the General Assembly Transportation Committee, said the delegation is also seeking $10 million to widen Route 7 from the Loudoun/Fairfax County border to Reston and eventually to Tysons Corner.
